Well I read that lovely bit of Weider propoganda, and oddly it failed to mention how they screwed over many an individual like Dan Lurie etc. Also Klein was pretty much on the money with what he was saying and it wasn't until Vince McMahon came along and offered WBBF contracts to BBs that the Weider boys had to change the way they conducted business with regards to BBs IE pro BBs and some high level amatures got contracts that offered money to remain with Weider and/or the IFBB, and because of Vince and his forsight this is still in effect and pro BBs can make some coin.

All in all this was a great piece of BS that you found JT, but the Weider boys were/are far from being saints. However they did manage to create a solid BBing federation and business, but they did so on the backs of countless BBs and business partners.

Hercules.... was that the one where he was riding around the city wearing a powder blue cowboy suit with Ann Margaret hanging all over him? Pumping Iron didn't make the theaters where I was from. I heard of it, but didn't see it until many years later. My first attention to strength/physique was caught in comics by the Charles Atlas course... "dynamic tension" was nothing but isometric push-pulls. It's ironic... I look better now than he did then. And I look like shit.
Remember Dave Draper? He was one of the early bigger boys with a real bodybuilder's size and condition who impressed me.

Dave guest posed at the 1980 Mr Victoria contest where I took the junior title, and HOLY SHIT I'd never seen that much muscle hanging off a human before!! Of course I've seen and stood onstage beside some really large MOFOs since then but Dave still stands out in my mind. Ah the impressions made on one when you are young stay with ya for life!!

Well it would certainly be different, but who can say whether or not it would be worse. Hell BBs could be making the kind a coin other pro's in major sports are making, or possibly we could still be where we were before the Mr Olympia was created in '65.......who knows for sure?

All I know is the Weider boys are far from being the saints people are making them out to be.

Impact on the sport? Absolutely.

Good point ps! But imo BB'ing as a whole at the PRO level will never achieve the status of the "boxed set"...ie; football, baseball, basketball, hockey, boxing, nasscar and drag-racing. The majority of "professional sports" reguire the athelete/individual to occasionally sacrifice their bodies (sometime their careers or even lives)...Pro sports are a "team" effort whereas BB'ing is a very personal and sometimes lonely thing! I doubt that the "O" will ever fill a 60,000 seat stadium or arena (or 20,000 for that matter)...the monetary reward for professional BB'ers is poultry if you ask me! We all know it. But we don't care because physique/strength atheletes maintain the religeous, rigorous, unselfish and brutal training, dieting and sacrifice because of the personal reward it gives us. Different to each and every one of us and yet still the same collectively! Funny! I know a few upper-level wrestlers and hardcore (UFC) martial-artists, and their opinions are the same...
They could care LESS about making a massive salary related to the sport that they love and live on a daily basis! THEIR SATISFACTION COMES FROM THE ACT OF JUST DOING IT ALONE!

 * on a side-note here, just to make yet another point. Brett Favre (EX Green Bay Packer) was offered 20 MILL., just to RETIRE! DO YOU HEAR THIS? (Brett declined btw as he is a true athelete as well) I wonder how much they (the powers that be) offered Ronnie to do the same?...nada! But you know...when it's all said and done...I would'nt change it for the world! That's just how much I enjoy what I do!
