After 2 1/2 hours of surgery, Victor Martinez’s torn left patellar tendon was succesfully reattached. The following is a firsthand account by orthopedic surgeon and top national bodybuilder Dr. Victor Prisk, who assisted in the surgery.

“I just returned from a long day in the operating room at The Hospital for Special Surgery. However, this wasn’t an ordinary day in the OR for me or the bodybuilding community. One of the greatest bodybuilders to grace the Olympia stage has suffered an unfortunate mishap.

Victor Martinez, while doing warm-up lunges at his gym, ruptured his patellar tendon. He consulted with myself and the world-renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Russ Warren yesturday. After confirmation of the diagnosis with x-rays and evaluation of its severity by MRI, he consented for surgery. The operation went well and he’s in good spirits. Let’s all give Victor support and encouragement throughout his recovery.”

Ya know it's weird that he blew that tendon as it is one of the (if the) biggest/strongest tendon in the body.

Agreed, and his lifting is impeccable. He uses very good form on all movements. I guess you never know when something is going to go.

Who knows also, with muscular strength jumping up and down in strength very fast in comparison to tendonal and ligamental strength, his contest training versus his offseason training may have had a role to play in it. I have seen where a person trains lighter for a extended period of time, then strength jumps dramatically (usually enhancement) and the tendons and ligaments are not able to keep up the pace with the muscle, as they were deconditioned with the several months of progressively lighter weights.

Bad call on Vic's part as lunges are about the worst warm-up exercize one could possibly do for quads. Way too many forces exerted on mainly the knee alone and surrounding muscle/tendon tissue...
You have a valid point as well HC, but i doubt if Vic ever goes too far away from "heavy" training for a long enough period of time to have his tendons weakened to that point....
