I have been speaking to a guy who just will not stop going on about the pro's of his new low carb high fat diet. Now by this I mean between 120-150g of fat a day, 1g of protein per lb of lean body mass and then the rest of his calories made up carbs.

What would be the advantage of this in terms of bodybuilding, for which this guy professes he in an expert?

Surely that huge amount of fat is ridiculous. He's 6"1 and 210-220lbs I believe.

Ok I use a diet that is similar when competing, but I keep my protein at 2 grams per pound of lean body weight carbs are under 100 grams and the rest of my diet is made up of EFAs/fats. Overall my cals for contest prep is 3200, so I also get a fairly large amount of fat in my diet but as it's primarilly EFAs they are used by the body for a great many functions as well as energy.

The reason this type of dieting works and works quite well is that with minimal carbs your insulin levels are kept low (insulin is a storage hormone and is not conducive to losing BF) thus allowing you to maintain a consistantly moderate blood surgar level. This way you maintain consistent energy levels rather than the roller-coaster ride that a high carb diet creates. Also fat (EFAs) as I have said are essential to overall health everything from eyesight to hormone formation to cell creation need fat as a major component, so limiting fat is counter productive to maintaining good health. Protein is also essential to the body on many levels and not just muscle growth but again it's used for formation of many cells etc in the body. Carbs are not essential to a healthy body and other than energy (glycogen which can also be created using protein) needed for muscle and brain function carbs are just not needed for overall health, and if to many carbs are consumed (easy to do) they will be converted to fat and stored.

Now what I have written is just a very brief overview so I suggest that you read/research this topic, as many leading nutritional experts in BBing are moving towards lower carbs/higher fats now. I would also suggest that you review what Dr Atkins has researched as well regarding this type of nutrition planning as well as start reading muscular developement as this mag researches this as well as other types of nutritional planning, supplements etc.

Thanks p.s.

That's really interesting, I honestly had no idea that could be beneficial. I'm still learning every day. So really, for the everyday person a higher fat diet could be hugely beneficial?

I will check out the research ideas you have suggested, thanks very much.

Yes a high protein, moderate fat (EFAs) and low carb diet will work well for anyone looking to become healthier and maintain a moderate to low BF level.

Actually young fella old school is low carbs, and this whole higher carb dieting was in vogue during the mid 80s through to the late 90s otherwise it's always been low carb dieting to get lean (as per Gironda, Arnold et al).
