Just reading elsewhere and people are handing out advice that you will burn calories whilst doing weights and continue to do so after.

Now I'm aware that you will burn calories after the workout but I was under the impression that you wouldn't whilst working out. Weight Lifting is an anaerobic activity from what I understand you will not as such burn calories whilst lifting but afterwards when your muscles are being repaired and glycogen is being used in this process then you'll burn more calories whilst this is taking place.

If someone is able to clear that up for me I'd appreciate it.

Calories are a raw energy unit, and any energy you expend will burn a cal or two from somewhere. Yes, you burn cals while lifting, but you burn more cals already stored as glycogen rather than blood glucose or fat stores. It is also true thsat it takes cals to replenish glycogen. Any excercise you do will add to your total daily calorie expenditure.

you burn calories more effeciently lifting than doing cardio. your body adapts to cardio very fast, which means you have to continually up your duration/intensity to maintain the fat burning aspect. you do burn more calories on an empty stomach (in regards to cardio) but;

~the more you lift, the stronger you get
~the stronger you get, the more muscle you create
~the more muscle you create, the more effecient your body becomes at burning fat

and lets face it, cardio SUCKS and should be avoided at all costs except pre-contest...anyone who does cardio on a regular basis is just wrong!!!!!

QOD has pretty much hit the nail on the head as well as MnB did with his answer, so head their advice and do not believe for one second that lifting does not burn cals (during as well as after).
