WASHINGTON, Feb 27, 2007 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The Center for Science in the Public Interest has released a study showing that popular chain restaurants' meals are jam-packed with calories.
After eating a 2,000-calorie appetizer, a 2,000-calorie main course and possibly a 1,700 calories dessert, most Americans have eaten almost three days worth of calories after eating one meal at Ruby Tuesday, On the Border, the Cheesecake Factory and countless other chain restaurants, reported a release from the CSPI.
But, most customers at these restaurants do not understand the vast amount of calories that they are consuming due to the fact that most chains do not have nutritional information readily available on menus. Their customers don't have a clue that they might be getting a whole day's worth of calories in a single dish, or several days' worth in the whole meal, the release said.
"Burgers, pizzas, and quesadillas were never health foods to begin with, but many restaurants are transmogrifying these foods into ever-more harmful new creations, and then keeping you in the dark about what they contain," said Michael F. Jacobson, executive director of the CSPI.

Over here in England pretty much all the large supermarket chains print nutritional information in large writing on the front of packets, and all products. They sometimes use a pie chart to show the difference between protein carbs and fat in each, but most have taken the approach of using a 'traffic light' system. Red being full of shit, amber ok, and green is decent.

Personally I would love to see that fast food chains and restaurants HAVE to put nutritional information for their products on the menu, or in the case of a fast food outlet, on the boxes.

I agree and I would like to see some restaurants more honest about how they prepare "healthy"  menu items.  I ordered grilled chicken and steamed vegetables once last year.  I got grilled chicken and steamed vegetables swimming in some kind of buttery liquid that they ladle out of pots on the back of the grill.  I was cranky that day so I sent it back.

Good for you sending that crap back, and I also notice that if you dare ask for some type of "special" meal IE baked chicken and steamed veggies that it's just tossed on the plate and looks about as appetizing as cardboard!
