If you are carrying alot of belly fat, do you think working you abs is worth it..

Or should I say, is it effective?

I would say yes, as when you cut and loose the fat you will want your abs to have a decent size and so making them look well defined.

I agree with you, RJSMuscle.  Althought, doing certain exercises helps to build those core muscles, like squats, deads, bench, etc.  Genetics plays a huge role with abdominals.  If you are wanting to see those "6-pack" abs, then it's all sitting in your nutrition and cardio.  If you are just wanting to strengthen your core, then incorporating some abdominal work will help.

I agree with DQ in that if ya wanna see those abs then nutrition and cardio are going to be of primary focus. However if you don't develope the abs to any great degree then you may find that your abs could be less than impresive even with a very low BF% (any old timers remember Boyer Coe and his less than great abs?). So in answer to your question yes go ahead and train/develope the abs but do so in a constructive manner IE using resistance and learning how to do an effective contraction of the abdominal muscles and not just the hip flexors.
