Is it unhealthy to get 180g of protein a day from shakes?

Not from my perspective as I have about 6-7 shakes a day and each is on average 70 grams of protein. Why does this myth persist that shakes are bad for you? I mean sure wayyyy back in the day they were not the best things in the world and solid food/protein was the safer way to go, but today the high quality of supplements we have available is just fine and quite good for you, and that includes protein shakes.

No, it isn't unhealthy.
I personally usually have 3-4 shakes a day including the one before bed, each consisting of ~50g protein. I still like to eat 3-4 solid meals a day as I dont like having nothing but liquid meals (plus it gave me the runs when I tried that!)

Just a little FYI, I get a ton of my protein from shakes as well....3/day and each has about 50 grams of protein.

the general rule is 1g/lb of body weight
so if you're over 180 lbs than you should be fine.
try getting some protein from "real food" also

Everyone has a different opinion here. If I didn't have shakes as a protein source, I would never make it. As a personal trainer, I'm always on the floor and going solid through clients for about 4-5 hours straight. If I took in only 1 gram/lb of my body weight, I would never be able to maintain my size right now. Sitting at 160 lbs right now, I still take in around 350 grams and I'm dieting down right now.

That ratio truely depends on how your diet is constructed, so you use a lot of carbs in your diet then ya the protein stays low ie 1 gram per LB but if the carbs are low (and they should be for most) then your protein should be at 1.5-2 grams per LB. Fats (EFAs) should be maintained at a higher than you may think level.

Damn! I don't mean to be nosy here p.s., but your body/intestines deals with this okay? I've had to drop protien shakes entirely 'cuz that whole green-apple-quick-step thing doesn't work out too well for me..... Espacially with a 30-35 minute commute to/from work.

Hell Bob I've been eating like this for the last 25+ years, and noI have had no issues other than a bit of gas, depending on the protein source, to deal with. Now what the hell does a green apple have to do with anything (I seldom eat fruit!)?
