All these years that I've been doing side lateral raises, I do them out wide at the top. While at the top, I try to hold my thumbs lower that my pinkies. and yes, my elbows are bent , a little bit.
Now, while looking at the latest Flex magazine, in an article about Johnnie Jackson delt training titled  "The Jackson 5", on page 172, he shows how he does the aforementioned side lateral raises.
Frankly, to me, he looks like he's doing upright rows...... with dumbells. Huh
Admittedly, when you look at him, and(if you could) look at me, you would certainly draw the conclusion that he knows what he's doing..... and maybe i don't. But it just doesn't look right. Undecided

Thoughts?

He may be doing upright rows, I havent seen that issue. You sound like your doing them right, lock your arms in a slight bend and let the deltoids do all the work on the raise.

Everybody does things slightly different to hit their muscles, as we are all built differently. My lateral raise may be slightly different than yours, assuming we have the same mind-muscle connection. Johnny definately knows what he is doing, hence his awesome freaky phisique, but he may be doing what works for him, or he may be mislabeling the upright row with a lateral raise (or the magazine did).

I agree with HC on this, and as an example when I do side laterals I do not pull the DBs any higher than where I get a full contraction. In fact if I were to pull up to the point that most people do my traps take over completely, and with Johnny it my be that this version of sides/uprights may be in his best interest when targeting his medial delts. We are all very different when it comes to genetics!
